Newborn puppies were shunned by their mother, but luckily another mom happened to be nearby and welcomed the pups into her care even though the animals were two different species.
Puppies are adorable and it is hard to imagine anyone not falling over the tiny creatures. But once in a while, a mama dog will shun one or some of her own babies. It could be due to the mom suffering from an ailment and being unable to care for her young or the mom detecting an illness with the pup. Regardless of the reason, uncared-for pups have a slim chance of surviving.
Such was the case for a chihuahua after giving birth to premature puppies. Out of the four babies, only two survived, yet the mother shunned her surviving pups.
Debra Cantwell, an adoption coordinator for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SPCA) in Florida, didn’t want to give up hope for the two chihuahua-mix babies.
At the center, a Siamese cat had just given birth to a litter of kittens and was nursing them. Cantwell took the two baby chihuahuas to the mother cat, and much to Cantwell’s delight, she accepted them! She licked the puppies and made space for them amongst her own kittens.
If the mother cat didn’t accept the puppies, another alternative would have been to feed them using syringes. But luckily she did, and the sight of this mixed family is heartwarming to see.
It’s not the first time a cat has been known to nurse puppies, nor will it be the last.
