A hotel housekeeper from Michigan found a bag full of cash and promptly sought out the owner to return it. The honest act brought the owner to tears.
In 2015, an elderly couple, identified as Tony and Betty, packed everything out of their home in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to move closer to their family in Kentucky.
En route to their new home, they checked in at the Ann Arbor Regent Hotel.
Tony and Betty later checked out from the hotel, not knowing they had left behind something valuable.
Only upon reaching their new home in Kentucky did they realize Betty’s bag was missing.
They didn’t have the money to pay the movers, and Betty couldn’t figure out where she had lost her bag.
Fortunately, Betty’s bag was in safe hands.
It transpired that Brigid Murray, a housekeeper at the hotel, found the bag in the bottom drawer of the hotel room dresser.
Inside the bag was 11 x $1,000 bills. A large sum of money.
Murray knew the bag belonged to the elderly couple, whom she had chatted with earlier that day. But they were long gone.
She could have kept the cash, but she didn’t hesitate to do the right thing—she turned it all in.
Betty reportedly cried tears of joy and relief upon learning the hotel had found her bag.
The bag was eventually returned to Betty. Because of Murray’s honesty, the elderly couple didn’t lose their life savings.
“She’s a true example of the world is still a good place,” Dewayne Grann, general manager of Ann Arbor Regent Hotel, told WXYZ-TV Detroit.
Do the right thing even when no one is watching as “it will gratify some people and astonish the rest,” American writer Mark Twain famously wrote.
