10 Common Not-So-Healthy Shower Habits We’d All Better Forget About

You’re probably wondering what could possibly go wrong during a shower, right? The thing is, when you shower, you place your entire body under water and use different types of soaps and scrubs that might actually be damaging your skin. Since showering is something that is considered to be extremely simple and personal, we are rarely taught which things may be harmful and which habits are good to have.

1. Washing your face



It seems to be very convenient to wash your face when you are in the shower, but it’s really not good for your face. Most people shower under hot water and it’s usually a much higher temperature than the water you’d use to wash your face. The facial skin is very sensitive so it’s better to use lukewarm water so as not to harm your face.

2. Not washing your feet

It probably seems that washing the feet is totally unnecessary because you are standing right in the water during the shower. The problem with this misconception is that wet doesn’t automatically mean clean. Our feet get into contact with all sort of stuff when we walk and they sweat too. They do a big job for us so bend down and give them a good wash — they deserve it.

3. Not replacing your loofah regularly

It is a very well-known fact that mold loves warm and wet conditions and this is exactly what we have in the showers. Therefore, if you are using the same loofah for months and years, there is a very good chance that you are already sharing it with the mold. If you cannot see it, it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Wash your loofah very well after each use, hang it somewhere where it can air dry, and replace it once a month.

4. Using a soap dish

If you use bar soap, check where you put it after each use. Built-in soap dishes are not the best choice for the same reason as above — bacteria and fungi love it. A wire soap dish or one with spikes are much better options. Plus, your soap won’t get soggy, which is a huge bonus.

5. Using liquid scented soaps

Sure, it may smell very nice, but if you have sensitive skin, liquid scented soap might not be your friend. Some chemicals in the liquid soaps can cause irritation, especially the fragrances. If your skin is dry and sensitive, using the fragrance-free liquid soap can make a big difference. Another option is using bar soap with no fragrance, coloring, or other harmful ingredients.

6. Using old razors

Another bad habit that many of us have is using a razor until it’s totally useless. Remember those bar dishes and loofahs growing new unwanted life? Well, razors aren’t any different. In fact, it’s worse because if the razor is not sharp enough, it will give you many tiny cuts that you might not even notice. They may be too small for your eye, but big enough for the mold that has been growing between the blades on your razor.

7. Leaving your razor in the shower

The reason why you shouldn’t leave your razor in the shower is the same as above — mold loves any warm and damp environment. If you really want to store your razor inside the shower, find a spot where you can hang it, so it gets completely dry quickly after each use.

8. Washing your hair daily

Washing your hair every day is not a good idea because extensive washing may dry your scalp and in order to compensate for the drying, it will start producing even more oil. Guess what will happen next? Oily hair. If you already have this habit, try to use dry shampoo on your roots and wash the hair every other day.

9. Not taking a shower after exercising

Have we mentioned that bacteria prefer warm and wet conditions? Sweat provides both and bacteria just love it. It is great that you stay strong and fit, but surely it is not impossible to find a few minutes for the shower after you exercise. You will feel better and you’ll definitely smell better too.

10. Skipping the moisturizer

Ok, guys, you can pretend that you would never use a moisturizer because it’s “only for girls.” But that’s not the case. It’s not just for girls — it’s for skin so that it doesn’t get too dry. It is a good idea to use a moisturizer soon after you take a shower because it absorbs slightly better when your skin is warm. Plus, it replaces the moisture that your skin loses during very hot showers.
